Story:

Governor throws light on the 1991 balance-of-payments crisis, one of the toughest economic phases India has ever faced. With the country’s foreign exchange reserves dropping below safe levels, India stands dangerously close to bankruptcy.

At this crucial moment, A. Ramanan (Manoj Bajpayee) steps in as the newly appointed RBI Governor. With the nation struggling to stay afloat, the government entrusts him with the enormous responsibility of steering India away from economic disaster.

Plus Points:

LPG (Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization) played a major role in shaping India into the world’s fourth-largest economy. While most people know how Dr. Manmohan Singh transformed the economy through LPG reforms, not everyone is aware of the circumstances that led to those historic decisions. Governor effectively presents the chain of events that paved the way for this major turning point in India’s history.

One of the film’s biggest strengths is that it stays politically neutral. Instead of taking sides, Governor focuses purely on the events as they unfolded, keeping the storytelling grounded and realistic. Rising oil prices, inflation-led unrest, and political leaders struggling to hold on to power while the country teeters on the edge of collapse are all presented neatly without becoming overly preachy.

Manoj Bajpayee once again proves why he is one of the finest actors in the industry. As RBI Governor Ramanan, he delivers a deeply restrained and powerful performance. Despite immense political pressure and countless challenges, the character remains calm and composed, and Bajpayee portrays this beautifully. The National Award-winning actor brings dignity and depth to the role effortlessly.

Madhoo performs well as Bajpayee’s wife, while Adah Sharma makes her presence felt as a journalist. Noushad Mohamed Kunju, who plays Deputy Governor C. Rangarajan, also does a commendable job. Jaywant Wadkar as a peon leaves a good impression, while the supporting cast contributes effectively.

Minus Points:

The film could have packed a stronger punch if the first half had moved at a sharper pace. Governor takes some time to settle into its rhythm, and slightly tighter editing could have improved the overall impact. While the second half feels more gripping and engaging, the first half remains decent rather than exceptional.

Another drawback is the emotional subplot involving an employee who dreams of settling permanently in the USA. Unfortunately, this track doesn’t create the emotional impact it aims for and feels disconnected from the main story. Removing it might have made the film more effective.

Also, Governor is not designed for viewers expecting a typical commercial entertainer. The film stays completely away from mainstream masala elements, making it important to walk in with the right expectations. Fans of financial thrillers and realistic storytelling are likely to appreciate it more than audiences looking for pure entertainment.

Technical Aspects:

Amit Trivedi’s music works well, while Mannan Shah’s background score complements the film nicely. Vishal Sinha’s cinematography stands out with visually impressive frames, and Rajesh Choudhary’s production design successfully recreates the atmosphere of the 1990s.

After Dhurandhar, casting director Mukesh Chhabra once again gets it right, choosing actors who fit their roles perfectly.

Director Chinmay Mandlekar handles the subject with authenticity. He keeps the narrative engaging by adding emotional depth at the right moments. The way the protagonist tackles problems by drawing ideas and inspiration from people around him is portrayed in a convincing manner.
