Spain Edges Argentina 1-0 in Extra Time to Win Second World Cup Title
Spain captured their second FIFA World Cup crown with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over defending champions Argentina in the 2026 final at New York New Jersey Stadium. After a tense 90 minutes ended goalless, substitute Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, finishing from close range after an assist from Nico Williams to seal a historic triumph for La Roja.
Spain dominated possession and created the better scoring opportunities throughout the match, but Argentina's resolute defense and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez kept the contest level until extra time. Argentina's task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off late in regulation, leaving the reigning champions to play extra time with 10 men.
The victory marks Spain's second FIFA World Cup title, their first since 2010, capping an outstanding tournament in which they conceded just one goal. Midfielder Rodri was named the tournament's Golden Ball winner after orchestrating Spain's midfield throughout the competition.
For Argentina, the defeat ended hopes of retaining the World Cup and may have marked Lionel Messi's final appearance on football's biggest stage. Despite the disappointment, Messi received an emotional ovation after the final whistle as Spain celebrated a memorable championship victory.
