The much-awaited reunion of Shahid Kapoor and director Vishal Bhardwaj is finally here with O’ Romeo. This romantic action thriller created solid buzz before release, especially with Triptii Dimri playing the female lead. Released in theatres today, the film promised style, passion, and action. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive in.

Story:

Set in Mumbai in 1995, the story revolves around Ustar (Shahid Kapoor), a contract killer who operates under Police Inspector Khan (Nana Patekar). He takes money from Khan to eliminate criminals.

One day, Afshan (Triptii Dimri) approaches Ustar with a dangerous request — she wants him to kill four people responsible for her husband’s murder. She specifically blames Jalal (Avinash Tiwary) for playing a major role in the crime. However, Ustar refuses to kill Jalal and sends her away.

But things don’t end there. What follows? Why does Afshan eventually stay with Ustar? Does love enter the picture? And how does it all conclude? The rest unfolds on the big screen.

Plus Points:

Shahid Kapoor delivers a solid performance in this Vishal Bhardwaj directorial. He looks sharp and convincing as a stylish gangster, and the action sequences are slick and well choreographed. His body language and intensity suit the role perfectly.

Triptii Dimri performs sincerely as a woman burning with revenge. She handles the emotional portions well and adds depth to her character.

Some of the scenes between Shahid and Triptii are engaging, especially their dialogue exchanges. The opening theatre action sequence is shot stylishly and sets the tone effectively. Shahid also convincingly portrays the pain of love, adding emotional weight to his character.

A few twists in the narrative, particularly the one connected to Triptii’s character, are interesting. The scenes where the protagonist goes to extremes for his loved one are impactful. The climax action episode stands out and is executed well.

Minus Points:

The film struggles with its identity. It tries to blend gangster drama, romance, and action, but the mix feels uneven, leaving viewers confused about the genre.

Some mass-heavy dialogues meant to elevate the hero fall flat. Despite the stylish making, the core story is quite routine. A few illogical scenes weaken the overall impact.

The first half moves at a slow pace and may test the audience’s patience. Except for the action blocks, the narration feels flat at times. The romantic track between the leads occasionally becomes repetitive and dull.

Despite having a strong supporting cast, many characters don’t get enough scope. Tamannaah Bhatia’s role, in particular, lacks impact, and a cameo in the flashback feels underutilized.

While the action scenes are stylish, their placement isn’t always effective. The face-off between the hero and villain could have been much stronger. The songs fail to leave a lasting impression.

As a director, Vishal Bhardwaj clearly puts in effort to elevate the simple storyline with style and emotional layers. However, the screenplay could have been tighter and more gripping.

Ben Bernhard’s cinematography is decent and complements the film’s dark tone. The songs by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are average, but the background score works better and enhances the intense moments.

The editing by Arif Sheikh could have been sharper, as several scenes feel stretched and needed trimming. On the positive side, the production values are solid and add richness to the overall presentation.
