Among this week's theatrical releases, DC has grabbed plenty of attention as it marks the acting debut of acclaimed filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj. Directed by Arun Matheswaran, this mass action drama also created buzz with Anirudh Ravichander's music. But does the film live up to the expectations? Here's our review.

Story:

Set in the Chittoor region in 2011, the story opens with a criminal gang attacking police vehicles and stealing a cache of weapons. Devadas (Lokesh Kanagaraj) is one of the members of this gang. The case takes a shocking turn when the gang murders the police officer investigating the robbery, creating a major challenge for the police department. To crack the case, officer Bhogaraju is assigned to hunt down the gang.

Why did the gang kill the investigating officer? What does Devadas lose, and what does he gain along the way? Do the police eventually succeed in capturing the gang? And how do Chandra (Wamiqa Gabbi) and Parvathi (Sanjana Krishnamoorthy) influence Devadas' journey? The answers unfold on the big screen.

Plus Points:

The biggest highlight of DC is Arun Matheswaran's engaging screenplay, which keeps the story moving at a steady pace. Another major strength is Anirudh Ravichander's outstanding music, with both the songs and background score adding tremendous energy to several important scenes. Above all, Lokesh Kanagaraj makes an impressive and confident acting debut.

Many viewers may walk into the theatre with average expectations after watching the promotional material, but the film quickly wins them over with several impactful moments. The screenplay remains engaging for most of the runtime and presents events from multiple perspectives, almost like two sides of the same coin. This approach makes the emotional moments more effective.

Lokesh Kanagaraj fits naturally into the rugged role of Devadas and delivers a convincing performance. Wamiqa Gabbi gets a well-written role and performs with ease despite portraying a relatively understated character. Her scenes in the second half leave a strong impact. Sanjana Krishnamoorthy has limited screen presence but manages to make a pleasant impression with her charming performance.

Guru Somasundaram, best known for Minnal Murali, surprises with his performance as the antagonist. His confrontation scenes with Lokesh and his gang are engaging throughout. The supporting cast also performs their respective roles effectively.

A special mention goes to Anirudh Ravichander, whose music elevates the film to another level. Whether it's the songs or the background score, his work consistently enhances the storytelling. The interval sequence, Lokesh's entry during the climax, and an important scene involving Wamiqa stand out even more because of his powerful score.

Minus Points:

While DC offers plenty of entertaining moments, its core storyline isn't particularly fresh or original. Some portions involving the police department feel reminiscent of Jai Bhim, making those sequences seem somewhat familiar.

Another area where the film falls short is the conflict between the hero and the villain. The rivalry isn't developed strongly enough, and after a certain point, the antagonist's obsession with the protagonist raises a few questions. This aspect could have been explored in a more convincing manner.

Technical Aspects:

Sun Pictures has delivered impressive production values, giving the film a natural and visually appealing look. Anirudh Ravichander's music is undoubtedly one of the film's biggest assets. Mukesh G's cinematography beautifully captures the mood of the story, while G.K. Prasanna keeps the narrative crisp with sharp editing.

Director Arun Matheswaran deserves credit for delivering an engaging mass entertainer. His screenplay, impactful sequences, and smart use of music keep the audience invested throughout. Although the central premise isn't entirely new, the execution works well enough to make the film engaging.
