Malayalam blockbuster Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has now made its way to Telugu theatres. Starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, the film is directed by Girish AD. So, does this rom-com live up to the hype? Let’s find out.

Story:

Justin (Nivin Pauly) is a middle-aged man who runs a catering business and lives with his family. He is unmarried, but there is a strong reason behind his decision to remain single.

Things take an interesting turn when a family moves into his neighborhood. Ashley (Mamitha Baiju), a college student from the family, gradually becomes friends with Justin. Their friendship eventually blossoms into love, with Ashley falling for him.

Justin initially tries to resist her feelings, but he eventually accepts her love. The rest of the story revolves around how Justin and Ashley try to convince their respective families and get their approval for a smooth marriage.

Plus Points:

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is one of the finest rom-coms to come out of Malayalam cinema in recent times. When it comes to fun and entertainment, the film is right up there with Premalu. The entertainment quotient remains strong almost throughout.

The movie is packed with several rib-tickling sequences that are sure to leave the audience in splits. The situational comedy works particularly well, resulting in plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The Telugu dubbing has also been handled smartly and adds to the overall impact.

The first half is especially hilarious, with several scenes that effectively tickle the funny bone. More importantly, the comedy remains wholesome and clean. Full marks to Girish AD for delivering such enjoyable family-friendly entertainment.

Nivin Pauly is phenomenal as the middle-aged Justin. He convincingly brings out the character’s inner conflicts and emotional struggles. His scenes with Mamitha Baiju are a major highlight, and the duo shares wonderful chemistry.

Mamitha Baiju is equally impressive. A role like this seems to be a perfect fit for her, and she handles it with ease.

Sangeeth Prathap is excellent as Joel, Nivin Pauly’s younger brother, and adds considerably to the comedy. Roshan Shanavas also steals the show in a few scenes as Glikson. The remaining supporting actors deliver solid performances as well.

Minus Points:

Instead of staying purely focused on being a fun-filled entertainer, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit also tries to bring in emotional depth. The intention is understandable, but the execution could have been more effective.

The pacing slows down at a few points in the second half, while the climax feels slightly stretched. A few portions could have been trimmed to make the overall experience tighter.

Technical Aspects:

Vishnu Vijay’s music is pleasant to hear, and the Telugu versions of the songs have been translated decently. Ajmal Sabu’s cinematography beautifully captures the scenic locations of God’s Own Country.

The editing works well during the first half, but the second half could have benefited from some trimming.

Coming to director Girish AD, he has once again delivered a winner after Premalu. His handling of the comedy sequences is particularly impressive. At a time when violent films are dominating the big screen, clean and entertaining rom-coms like this are certainly welcome.

Verdict:

On the whole, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is an enjoyable rom-com that delivers plenty of comedy and keeps the audience entertained. The film maintains a steady flow of humour, with several laugh-out-loud moments throughout.

Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju are excellent in their respective roles, while Girish AD delivers another winner after Premalu.

The film does attempt to add emotional depth, but some of the emotional portions towards the end feel prolonged and could have been handled better. Nevertheless, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit remains a clean comedy-drama that can be enjoyed with the entire family.
