Maremma marks the acting debut of Ravi Teja’s nephew, Maadhav Bhupathiraju. Directed by Manchala Nagaraj, this rural action drama has now arrived in theatres. So, does the film live up to the expectations? Let’s find out.

Story

Set in Mahishapuram in Telangana, Maremma explores the customs, traditions, and religious practices followed by the villagers, particularly their worship of the deity Maremma. As part of their tradition, a sacred buffalo is sacrificed as an offering to the deity.

Maari is one such sacred buffalo, raised by Karni (Maadhav Bhupathiraju) to be offered to Maremma. However, things take a dramatic turn when Maari suddenly goes missing, sending shock waves through the village.

Plus Points

The songs that showcase Telangana culture and traditions have been handled well and are neatly picturized. The first half also has a couple of moments that are presented effectively.

Making his acting debut, Maadhav Bhupathiraju puts in a decent performance. However, the writing does not give him enough scope to truly shine. Deepa Balu looks convincing as a village belle, and she delivers a satisfactory performance.

Minus Points

The biggest problem with Maremma is that the film struggles to clearly convey what it actually wants to say. It is difficult to understand what the director ultimately wanted the audience to take away from the story. If the intention was to deliver a message about animal sacrifices, the film fails to make that point effectively.

The entire second half revolves around the search for the missing sacred buffalo. Unfortunately, the screenplay is bland and packed with dull moments. The search lacks both thrills and emotional depth, making the proceedings largely unexciting. The weak connection between several scenes further affects the flow.

The first half is not free from problems either, with several boring and repetitive sequences. The protagonist develops a bond with the animal and refuses to sacrifice it earlier in the film. Exploring this emotional angle in greater depth could have added considerable weight to the story and potentially made the film much better.

The antagonist track is another major disappointment. The witchcraft episodes fail to create any real impact. For most of its runtime, the film remains flat and boring, which turns out to be its biggest drawback.

Technical Aspects

Prashanth Vihari and Bipradeep Dutta have done a good job with the songs and background score. Prasanth Ankireddy’s cinematography is fine, while the editing leaves a lot to be desired. The production values are okay.

Manchala Nagaraj’s direction and writing are lacklustre. There are very few moments that genuinely keep the audience invested in the proceedings. Maremma lacks clarity not only in its vision but also in its execution.

Verdict

Overall, Maremma is a dull rural drama that lacks a clear sense of direction and purpose. The film remains boring and unexciting for most of its runtime, with very few memorable moments to take away. Maadhav Bhupathiraju puts in a decent effort in his debut, but weak writing and lacklustre execution ultimately make Maremma a disappointing watch.
