Sigma is the latest Tamil movie and marks the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, son of Tamil Nadu CM Vijay. Sundeep Kishan plays the lead in this heist drama, which has hit the screens today. So, does Jason Sanjay make a strong start as a director, or does the film miss the mark? Let’s find out.
Story:
Set in Vizag, Guru (Sundeep Kishan) runs a home library that was once his mother’s favourite place. But his life is weighed down by his father’s Rs. 1 crore debt, putting him under immense pressure to clear it quickly.
Things take an unexpected turn when Guru learns about a dangerous drug called Ceaser, which is being handled by Vincent. With solid evidence that could shut Vincent’s business down, Guru blackmails him for money.
However, Guru is unaware that an international smuggler, Kotlapadi Venkata Reddy (Sampath Raj), is pulling the strings from behind the scenes and has something much bigger in mind. Does Guru manage to get the money, or does he end up getting crushed by the villains? That forms the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
Sundeep Kishan puts his complete trust in Jason Sanjay’s vision and delivers what the director demands from him. He gives an honest effort throughout the film and looks decent in the action sequences.
Faria Abdullah has very limited screen time and appears only in a handful of scenes, where she does an okay job. Sampath Raj gets a considerably bigger role and delivers a familiar yet solid performance as the villain with ease.
Minus Points:
Sigma starts off with a routine, paper-thin story that offers hardly any freshness. There is nothing wrong with picking a simple plot, but going ahead without a strong screenplay becomes a major problem. The opening portions drag badly, while the scenes involving the lead pair lack energy and feel completely lifeless.
By the interval, the film throws logic out of the window in an attempt to create a dramatic twist. Guru loses something he has wanted to protect all his life, but the scene fails to show the required pain or sadness on his face. Since the emotional writing lacks depth, the interval moment fails to create the intended impact.
The second half becomes a real test of patience as the story keeps moving in repetitive and boring circles. It is difficult to understand how the hero and his gang manage to travel abroad and execute a massive heist without facing any significant obstacles.
The audience is left wondering why even simple sequences are made unnecessarily confusing and why similar moments keep getting repeated. The forced comedy inserted into serious scenes makes things worse, disturbing the flow and reducing the impact of the sequences.
The climax and final portions completely lose steam. There is hardly any thrill or exciting payoff. Several unnecessary scenes appear out of nowhere, further stretching the runtime and testing the audience’s patience.
Technical Aspects:
Jason Sanjay picks a routine story and attempts to present it as a heist drama, but the writing and direction fail to make an impact. The cinematography is strictly average, while the editing looks outdated, with distracting flickers and unusual colour choices.
Thaman’s music fails to elevate the proceedings and remains largely ineffective. The production values are just about adequate, but the artificial green-screen backdrops look quite cheap on screen. The Telugu dubbing is average.
Verdict:
On the whole, Sigma is a below-par heist drama that fails to create much of an impact. Sundeep Kishan puts in a sincere effort, but weak writing, flawed direction, and underdeveloped characters work against the film.
With limited emotional depth and a stretched runtime, Sigma eventually turns into a disappointing watch.
