After the blockbuster success of Karuppu, Suriya is back with the family drama Vishwanath And Sons. Directed by Venky Atluri, the film stars Mamitha Baiju as the female lead. With decent buzz surrounding it, the movie has hit the big screens today. So, is it worth watching? Let’s find out.

Story:

Sanjay Vishwanath (Suriya) is a well-known industrialist who is also a professional pistol shooter. His mother (Radhika) wants him to get married, but Sanjay has a negative opinion about marriage. That’s when Maddy (Mamitha Baiju) enters his life and gradually gets closer to him.

The rest of the story revolves around the family drama and the emotional relationship between the lead pair.

Plus Points:

The first half is thoroughly engaging, with plenty of lively moments and entertaining portions. The story is set up well, the bond between Radhika and Suriya is established nicely, and the female lead makes her entry at the right moment.

Once Mamitha Baiju enters the story, the comedy picks up considerably. Radhika, who plays Suriya’s mother, and Sunil Reddy, who plays his brother-in-law, add more fun to the proceedings along with the lead pair. The combination of these four characters keeps a pleasant smile on the audience’s face throughout the first half.

Suriya brings his natural charm to the character of Sanjay Vishwanath and impresses with his effortless screen presence and stylish performance. He is particularly enjoyable in the lighter moments. The emotional scene where he breaks down also shows the performer in him.

The casting of Mamitha Baiju is arguably the best thing about the movie. Playing a spirited, energetic, and cheerful girl, she delivers a terrific performance. It would not be an exaggeration to say that she dominates the proceedings whenever the film shifts into comedy mode. Radhika and Sunil Reddy are also splendid in their respective roles.

Minus Points:

The film’s graph drops in the second half as formulaic writing takes over. The intention seems to be keeping the proceedings light-hearted through simple family moments and easily resolved conflicts. However, some scenes feel artificial and lack the required depth. The conflicts are not explored in detail and are wrapped up rather quickly.

Once the story shifts to Ooty, the focus moves away from the lead pair. The emotional bond between Suriya and Mamitha Baiju deserved better exploration. The climax is neat and simple, but the scenes leading up to it could have been handled more effectively.

The dialogue about relationships delivered by Raveena Tandon is questionable. The lyrics in the Telugu version are decent, though they could have been better.

Technical Aspects:

G. V. Prakash Kumar’s music is neat and suits the film’s light-hearted mood. Nimish Ravi’s cinematography is elegant, and the house portions have been shot nicely. The production values are solid. A few scenes could have been trimmed in the second half.

Coming to director Venky Atluri, he handles the first half quite effectively, but the second half doesn’t match the impact of the first. Since the film comes right after Lucky Baskhar, expectations are naturally high, as that movie set a gold standard. On the writing front, there are a few issues.

Verdict:

On the whole, Vishwanath And Sons is a light-hearted family entertainer packed with a good dose of fun and decent emotions. Suriya is charming while playing his age, whereas Mamitha Baiju steals the show with her lively performance. The first half is highly entertaining, but the writing stumbles somewhat in the latter half, with a few slow-paced and formulaic moments.

That said, the film keeps the overall proceedings breezy and makes for a neat family watch. Given its style and treatment, Vishwanath And Sons is likely to connect more with Telugu audiences than Tamil audiences.
