After a while, a film starring Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja has arrived with strong expectations. Directed by Shiva Nirvana, Irumudi features Priya Bhavani Shankar and Baby Nakshatra in key roles. So, does the film live up to the hype? Let’s find out.

Story

Trinadh (Ravi Teja) lives in Polluru and is a devoted follower of Ayyappa Swamy. He owns a banana plantation and shares a deep bond with his daughter, Manemma (Baby Nakshatra).

Manemma tells her father everything that happens in her life. While their closeness is heartwarming, it also gets Trinadh into trouble with certain people from time to time.

Manemma, along with the other girls from the village, travels to a neighbouring village for high school. What follows is a series of unexpected incidents that eventually pull Trinadh into action.

Plus Points

When was the last time we watched a Telugu film where the screenplay stays focused on its central story throughout the runtime without unnecessary deviations? If you have been missing that lately, Irumudi could be the answer.

Kudos to Shiva Nirvana for choosing honest storytelling and resisting the temptation to add unnecessary commercial elements. Almost every scene serves a purpose, and very little feels like filler. That kind of focused writing is rare, and the director deserves credit for it.

The biggest strength of Irumudi is undoubtedly the father-daughter relationship. The bond between Trinadh and Manemma is beautifully presented, and their scenes are designed to connect emotionally with the audience. Ravi Teja and Baby Nakshatra share some truly touching moments.

Behind the familiar Mass Maharaja image is a terrific performer, and Irumudi gives Ravi Teja plenty of scope to showcase that side of him. It is a delight to see him in a role where the actor takes complete control.

On screen, we see Trinadh rather than Ravi Teja. That level of immersion is a major achievement. When a talented actor gets the right role and material, this is the kind of performance that can come out. Ravi Teja’s emotional scenes, especially those with Baby Nakshatra, are difficult not to love.

Baby Nakshatra delivers a stupendous performance. She is adorable throughout and leaves a strong impression by the time the film reaches its conclusion.

Priya Bhavani Shankar, Sai Kumar, Ramesh Indira and the other actors do well in their respective roles. The intense sequences are handled with a raw and natural touch, which makes them more effective.

Minus Points

The pacing is slightly slow during the initial portions, and there are some noticeable lip-sync issues in this part that could have been corrected. The second half also experiences a few dips here and there.

The crime angle and major twists do not feel particularly fresh, as similar themes have been explored before. However, as mentioned earlier, the film manages to win the audience over through its sincere and honest storytelling.

Technical Aspects

G. V. Prakash Kumar’s songs and background score are well suited to the film. The devotional flavour and rustic atmosphere are nicely enhanced by his music.

Vishnu Sharma’s cinematography beautifully captures the scenic locations of Sileru and gives the film a strong visual appeal.

The production values are neat, while the editing is satisfactory.

Shiva Nirvana’s storytelling is one of the film’s biggest strengths. His filmmaking carries influences from movies like Rangasthalam and Naa Peru Shiva. Taking inspiration from other films is not necessarily a problem; what matters is how effectively the filmmaker turns that inspiration into a good product. Shiva Nirvana succeeds on that front.

More Telugu filmmakers could certainly take the Irumudi route by avoiding unnecessary commercial elements and keeping the story at the centre.

Verdict

Overall, Irumudi is a beautiful emotional ride packed with intense moments and sincere storytelling. The Ayyappa Swamy backdrop, touching father-daughter relationship, Ravi Teja’s spellbinding performance and, most importantly, the screenplay that remains faithful to its subject make the film impactful.

Yes, there are a few slow moments, and some of the themes are not entirely new. But the film’s emotional depth and honest approach successfully overshadow these minor flaws.
