Tamil Nadu Free Bus Travel for Women From October 2: Full Details

Tamil Nadu has announced an expansion of its free bus travel scheme for women, starting October 2, 2026.

  • The expanded “Vetri Payanam” scheme will cover women travelling on additional government buses, including Express, LSS (Limited Stop Service), and Deluxe services in metropolitan and urban areas.
  • In mofussil and hilly areas, ordinary-fare government buses will also be covered.
  • The government says there will be no income ceiling, distance restriction, or limit on the number of trips for women using the benefit.
  • The expanded scheme is expected to cost the state about ₹6,000 crore annually.
  • The announcement was made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on August 24, with the launch set for Gandhi Jayanti, October 2.

One important clarification: this isn't entirely new free bus travel for women. Tamil Nadu already provides free travel on eligible ordinary government city buses; October 2 marks the expansion to additional bus categories and wider areas.
