Thella Kaagitham is the latest film from Court fame Harsh Roshan. The movie introduces debutant Nakshatra as the female lead. So, does this youthful romantic drama manage to make an impact? Let’s find out.

Story:

Thella Kaagitham follows the lives of two teenagers, Ramu (Harsh Roshan) and Aasha (Nakshatra), who fall in love during their school days. But their lives take a dramatic turn after the young couple makes a mistake that changes everything.

Plus Points:

The first half of the film is handled fairly well, with several comedy scenes that work. Most of the humour comes from the innocence of the lead characters, and this brings some genuine laughs.

The youthful elements occasionally go overboard, but the entertainment factor manages to balance them out. Harsh Roshan once again chooses a subject that suits him well, and he delivers a good performance. His scenes with Deepak Mali are among the better moments of the film.

Nakshatra makes her silver-screen debut with Thella Kaagitham, and she looks confident throughout. It is a promising beginning for the actress, with a few of her expressions standing out. Ajay is decent in the role of the heroine’s father.

Minus Points:

Recent youth-oriented films have often followed a familiar formula: they highlight the negative side of youth, show youngsters getting influenced by bad friendships in an exaggerated manner, and eventually conclude with a message. Thella Kaagitham also follows this well-worn template.

Because of this, the proceedings become predictable once the second half begins. Filmmakers need to experiment with the storytelling in this genre and make some changes to the formula to create a stronger impact.

The film also suffers from a noticeable slowdown in the second half. The story takes time to move forward, and a few repetitive scenes could have been trimmed to make the runtime tighter.

The important conversation between the hero’s brother and Ajay towards the end is sensible. However, the scenes that lead up to this conversation are not handled effectively. The film could have created a stronger emotional impact by focusing more on the relationship between Harsh Roshan and Saranya Pradeep. A few scenes may also not appeal to family audiences.

Technical Aspects:

Vijay Bulganin’s songs are pleasant to listen to, and almost every track works effectively within the film. His background score is also good. K. V. Guhan’s cinematography is neat, capturing the small-town setting nicely. However, the editing is below par.

The production values are adequate. The story, screenplay, and direction are by Nandu Savarigana, and his work delivers mixed results. The climax needed to be handled carefully, as a different ending could have sent the wrong message by potentially encouraging youngsters to make mistakes.

Thankfully, the climax itself avoids that problem, but the rest of the second half fails to maintain the momentum established in the first half. A story like this would have benefited from a shorter runtime.

Verdict:

Overall, Thella Kaagitham is an okayish youthful romantic drama with a few positives. The first half is passable, thanks to some entertaining comedy, good music, and decent performances from the lead pair. However, the second half loses momentum as the pacing slows down and the impact gradually drops.

The film concludes on a decent note, but the issues in the latter half keep Thella Kaagitham from becoming a completely satisfying watch.
