Kiran Abbavaram's latest romantic drama Chennai Love Story has finally hit the big screens. Directed by Ravi Namburi, the film stars Sri Gouri Priya as the female lead. Baby fame Sai Rajesh has provided the story and screenplay while also producing the film along with SKN. So, does this emotional love story live up to expectations? Here's our review.

Story:

Nivedita (Sri Gouri Priya) is trying to recover from a life-changing incident that leaves her emotionally shattered. Hoping to help her heal, her friends take her to Chennai for a fresh start. There she meets Steven Shankar (Kiran Abbavaram), an aspiring filmmaker who dreams of becoming a successful director but struggles to achieve his goal.

At first, Nivedita cannot stand Steven, but as time passes, their bond grows stronger and eventually blossoms into love. Just when life seems to be getting back on track, another unexpected incident turns everything upside down once again.

Plus Points:

The first half is undoubtedly the film's biggest strength. Mani Sharma's soulful music, combined with several heartwarming moments between the lead pair, keeps the narrative engaging. The emotional struggles of the female protagonist are portrayed convincingly, while the screenplay establishes the male lead's character effectively at a steady pace.

Sri Gouri Priya once again proves why she is considered one of the industry's most promising talents. She delivers a powerful performance, especially during the emotional sequences, handling several demanding scenes with remarkable ease.

Kiran Abbavaram is equally impressive as an orphan. Unlike many of his earlier roles, this character demands a more restrained and mature performance, and he pulls it off convincingly. The beautifully written song lyrics also contribute well to the storytelling and enhance the emotional impact.

Minus Points:

One of the biggest drawbacks isn't entirely the film itself but the unfortunate trend of major twists getting revealed before release. Whether these leaks happen intentionally or not, they take away the excitement, and Chennai Love Story suffers because of it. Since the key surprise was already out, the interval block fails to create the intended impact.

The second half takes a noticeably lighter route with increased focus on comedy. While a few moments work well, this tonal shift may not connect with every viewer, and the overall treatment during this portion could feel inconsistent for some.

Although there are a handful of emotional scenes between the main characters later in the film, they don't receive the depth they deserve. A notable example is the cab sequence, which begins an important emotional conversation but wraps up too quickly without proper closure. Because of such unfinished moments, parts of the film feel incomplete. The way the heroine's mother reacts during a crucial situation also comes across as clichéd and predictable.

Technical Aspects:

Mani Sharma delivers an impressive soundtrack, and his music stands out as one of the film's strongest assets. Viswas Daniel captures the beautiful seaside locations with appealing visuals through his cinematography. However, the editing leaves room for improvement.

Considering the interval twist, the climax feels logical, although it is fairly easy to predict well in advance. Director Ravi Namburi chose a delicate and challenging subject, and he does a passable job of handling its complexities.

Verdict:

Overall, Chennai Love Story is a decent romantic drama that explores a tricky subject. The first half works well with engaging storytelling, memorable music, and emotionally appealing moments. However, the lighter second half and its narrative choices may not impress everyone. Kiran Abbavaram and Sri Gouri Priya deliver commendable performances, but the film's final impact largely depends on how audiences respond to the second half and the climax. If you're looking for a romantic film that attempts something a little different, Chennai Love Story is worth giving a watch.
